Hong Kong-based robotics company MangDang designed the robot, which was inspired by Stanford Pupper, which is a larger robot dog created to help kids and university students learn about robotics.

However, the parts to build a Stanford Pupper cost at least $599. So MangDang worked with Nathan Kau, the creator of the original robot, to make a cheaper version.

The company started raising money for the project on crowdfunding website Kickstarter in September 2021. People can buy Mini Pupper kits for as little as $254 if they provide other parts of the robot — like the battery — themselves. Customers can also buy a Mini Pupper that has been pre-assembled with all of the parts from $564.

When it's fully charged, the company says Mini Pupper runs for about 25 minutes. It uses a camera sensor to detect objects and self-driving technology to move around. Additional technology can be added, such as a 3D camera, to allow the robot to detect faces and respond to hand signals.

Mini Pupper is 16.5 centimeters tall and almost 21 centimeters long, and it weighs 560 grams. The robot can walk, run and even jump, and comes with a small screen on the front that displays facial expressions, which users can design themselves.

As well as the parts needed to build Mini Pupper, customers get documents and videos teaching them how to build and customize the robot.

MangDang had hoped to raise about $10,000 for the project on Kickstarter — but has raised more than $420,000 so far.
